Romrod Castle

Romrod Castle is a monument of supra-regional importance that tells a long and eventful story of the glory and end of the Hessian principalities.

It was built at the end of the 11th century as a moated castle by the Lords of Romrod.

During the 30 Years' War, the castle fell into disrepair and then remained without attention for a long time until Grand Duke Ludwig IV discovered Romrod Castle in 1878 and used it as a summer residence.

In 1937, the stately use ended - the state of Hesse became the owner of the castle. During the Nazi period it was used by the National Socialists as a hunting lodge, after the Second World War it served as refugee accommodation and then fell into disrepair again.

In 1996, the foundation Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz finally took over Romrod Castle and its restoration. Thanks to the foundation's great commitment, Romrod Castle is now a place of culture with a hotel and restaurant.
